Acupuncture Provides Effective Pain Relief

by Wendy Lind, RAc

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese traditional medical treatment. It is an effective and safe alternative to traditional drug therapies and pain relief treatments. Each organ or organ system in the body is connected via energy meridians which are vital energy pathways in the body. Acupuncture treatment clears the blockage of the vital energy that flows along the energy meridians.

Pain caused by muscle or bone weakness, injury, physical trauma, physical strain, poor posture and many other factors can be relieved by acupuncture. Individuals suffering from Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome as well as headaches cause by stress, migraines, back pain and even pain from cancer treatments can experience pain relief using acupuncture.

To ensure you receive the maximum benefit from your acupuncture therapy, you need to describe your pain as accurately as possible. In other words, your Acupuncturist will want to know when the pain started, whether or not it is constant or intermittent, whether it is the result of an injury or other physical trauma, etc. Different treatment points may be selected for different types of pain. When your Acupuncturist has accurate information, your treatment therapy will be more effective and you will experience pain relief in the shortest amount of time.

Acupuncture is generally a three-stop process. First, the organs that correspond to the specific pain are stimulated. By doing so, energy and blood flow to nourish the entire body and targets the area(s) experiencing pain. Determining the meridian to tap into is the second step and the final step is determining points of needle insertion that will target the painful area.

Stainless steel needles, about the thickness of a human hair, are inserted into specific treatment points in the body which send a message to the central nervous system. The central nervous system, in turn, sends a signal to the brain to release endorphins, a natural chemical within the brain that helps in pain suppression.

A personalized treatment plan will be developed by your Acupuncturist. The plan will consider the nature and source of the pain, i.e., chronic, radiating, result of injury, etc., as well as your significant medical history. The needles that are inserted during the treatments will be left in place for several minutes. The actual duration will be determined by your response to treatments, which will be scheduled for several weeks out, until you realize long-term pain relief.

Pain killers, anti-inflammatory drugs or muscle relaxants only provide temporary pain relief so must be used repeatedly and can have numerous adverse side effects. Acupuncture provides long-term alleviation of pain without the use of chemicals or ingredients that may negatively impact your health or interact with other treatment protocols. Because no drugs are used, acupuncture does not have debilitating side effects often experienced with over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

While acupuncture is not an instant cure, some symptoms may be diminished after just the first acupuncture therapy session. It takes time to restore your body’s energy systems to their properly balanced state. The number of treatments you will need to achieve complete pain relief will depend upon how long you have been in pain, the cause of the pain and how quickly you respond to the acupuncture therapy.

With no adverse side effects, acupuncture can be considered a completely safe alternative for pain relief. It is truly a holistic approach to pain relief, treating not only the pain but also the cause of the pain.
